How to ensure you energise on time
At Rock Power Connections, we are dedicated to delivering every project on time and on budget.
Through our decades of expertise and experience, we understand the main problems that often lead to project setbacks without prior planning or foresight. In this article, we’ll guide you through all the main causes of time delays so that you can strategise to ensure your electrical connection is energised on time.
If you choose an Independent Connections Provider (ICP), you must receive an approval from the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for the suggested design for your connection. The timescale for this may range between 2-4 weeks.
Making a change, no matter how minor, to your original connection design requires re-approval from the DNO. In most cases, the DNO will restart the clock to approve even the smallest design amends which can be incredibly frustrating and time consuming.
ARE YOU PLANNING ON EXPORTING ELECTRICITY?
Do you plan to install solar panels? With an increasing focus on flexible generation, exporting energy has become an attractive option. If you plan to export from the outset, or if you may be open to the option in the future, it’s important to let your ICP or DNO know as your connection design will need to incorporate electrical export capability.
UNCOMMON LOADS AND MOTORS
If you are developing a commercial space that will contain machinery, it is also essential that you let your connection supplier know. Large motors can impact the electricity network when they start up. Your ICP or DNO will need to factor this into the design and engineering.
WAYLEAVES & EASEMENTS
To energise your new or upgraded electrical connection, work may be necessary on third party land. For example, if an underground cable runs across your neighbour’s car park or field, legal permission and an agreement will need to be put in place to allow you to work on this.
The ‘Point of Connection’ may also take place on third party land, and if so, your local DNO will need to put an easement in place. This is the case even if an ICP leads the work on your behalf.
Both of these issues have delayed projects in the past and can easily be avoided by understanding the design requirements, as well as the local land rights. By starting the legal processes as soon as possible, you can ensure all permissions are obtained before the work commences.
BEWARE OF LONG LEAD TIMES!
It is not easy to store large electrical kit and these items are major investments too.
If your design includes switchgear, a substation or transformers, it’s important to leave yourself time for these items to be sourced, ordered and safely delivered to your site by your ICP or DNO. On average, it usually takes around 12 weeks to deliver a transformer to a site.
Civil works include work such as creating trenches for underground cables or a base for new substations, work that can be completed by your DNO or an ICP, like Rock Power Connections.
You may consider having these works carried out in-house if you already have construction workers on-site, but it’s critical that if you do settle on this, you ensure that the civil works are completed on time and to the right specification.
Avoid these extra delays by factoring in enough time and, if you are using contractors, ensure they fully understand what is needed and by when.
THE PROGRAMME OF WORKS
A robust and flexible schedule, in addition to a detailed programme of works are all key to making every electrical connection project a success.
You should discuss and agree a programme of works with your ICP or DNO, with all other parties involved in the project fully in agreement with and aware of the plans.
