DARRYL PUTS IN THE MILES FOR CHARITY

As lockdown hit the country, one of the Rock Surveying team swapped his usual work miles driving around the country for some intense pedalling around country lanes. Darryl Hall, Senior Utility Surveyor, has challenged himself to reach 500km by the end of June.

We caught up with Darryl as countdown begins.

HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A KEEN CYCLIST?

“Definitely not,” explains Darryl. “This began when a friend’s girlfriend tagged me in the Run For Heroes challenge, where you run 5km, donate £5 and then nominate a further 5 people to take up the challenge. I don’t think I’ve ever run a mile in my life, but I managed it and kept up the running for a week or so.

“But I quickly switched to wheels as I realised I could explore further, quicker and it also burnt more calories. With less time travelling to site, I could fit a 30km to 40km ride in first thing and be back by 8:30.”

WHERE DID THE 500KM TARGET COME FROM?

“It was actually my wife’s idea,” continues Darryl. “Given I was putting in the miles, I figured I could raise some money for charity at the same time. I decided to set up a fundraising page for Alzheimer’s Research UK and set the 500km target. It helps keep me motivated, knowing I have a number of miles to hit – you really feel the weight on your shoulders.”

SO HOW IS IT GOING?

“It has been going really well. I’ve done 440km so only have 60km left and a couple of weeks left to do it. However, I’m really busy onsite surveying and the travelling has ramped back up. It is so difficult squeezing a ride in, especially having two young kids. It’ll have to be weekend rides to get these last miles in.”

Darryl has proved that the changing work patterns during COVID-19 can be harnessed for a positive outcome; getting some fresh air and exercise whilst also raising money for a good cause. Well done, Darryl!
