CASE STUDY: TWIN SUBSTATION FOR LUXURY HOTEL DEVELOPMENTS

A development of twin hotels known as The Gantry in Stratford, London required two looped substations from a High Voltage (HV) point of connection on a busy road.
The Gantry includes a 285 bedroom hotel over 18-storeys by the Hilton Curio Collection and a 136 room longstay aparthotel over 17-storeys by Adagio.
As the development also includes new bars and restaurants on the lower floors and a new sky-bar on the 18th floor, the overall load was 2MVA.
The Point of Connection was granted by UKPN and involved a road crossing and considerable run to site along a block-paved walkway. Alongside it being a very busy construction site, the DLR station and Westfield shopping centre are in close proximity.
The installation comprised a 1MVA substation and 1.5MVA substation, each providing a LV bulk-metered supply in an adjacent switchroom.
Both substations were midel-filled due to their location and internal rooms.
Due to the number of contractors onsite, the work was programmed to be flexible to the site requirements.
A robust traffic management plan was put in place offsite to ensure minimal disruption to the general public.
