Rock Power Connections Swap Secret Santa To Support Local Food Bank
December 19, 2019
This Christmas, the Rock Power Connections team have opted to support members of the local community, by swapping the traditional office Secret Santa for donations to Worcester’s Food Bank.
Located close to Rock Power Connections’ Headquarters on Lowesmoor Wharf, Worcester’s Food Bank provides people in crisis with emergency 3-day parcels of nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food, whilst signposting to further support for those in need.
Dedicated to supporting local and charitable initiatives, 23 members of the Rock Power Connections team have opted to donate to the Worcester Food Bank, with each team member receiving a piece of paper via a ‘lucky dip’, informing them what item to purchase that is urgently needed by the Food Bank, ranging from tinned meat to washing powder.
Once the items were drawn, each team member was challenged to make the usual Secret Santa budget of £10 stretch to ensure the Rock Power Connections provided as much support as possible.
The donations were delivered to Worcester Food Bank during the week commencing 9th December 2019 and were immediately made into food parcels for those in need.
Emma Ward, who was the driving force behind the idea said: “There is a homeless man near me who I regularly take food to and with Christmas around the corner, it just made me think about the members of our community who have a lot less and cannot afford the nice things that so many of us are fortunate enough to have this time of year.
“Therefore, I didn’t see the point in doing our usual Secret Santa when we could be helping those in need. Everybody has really enjoyed getting involved and seeing how much can be donated for the usual £10 budget.”
In 2018, 6511 three-day emergency food supplies were given out by Worcester Food Bank to people in crisis, following a 23% increase in the number of people helped by the charity since 2016.
With more donations needed now than ever before, the project is supported by local churches and community groups, who work together in a bid to prevent hunger in the Worcester area.
