Meet Rock Surveying’s newest team member
Rock Power Connections has followed a steady growth trajectory since its inception. Accompanying this is the creation of local jobs and a flow of fresh faces joining the team, each bringing a fresh perspective.
Recently, we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming Chris Hall to the Rock Surveying team, which specialises in underground utility and topographical surveys. I was keen to catch up with Chris and find out what led him to Team Rock.
WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE SURVEYING AS A CAREER PATH?
As Chris explains “I never chose surveying, it chose me.”
Whilst Chris has over 5 years’ experience in surveying, he has an extensive background in hospitality spanning 15 years. Being a natural grafter, Chris quickly worked his way up to being General Manager, being responsible for three pubs and a packed schedule of functions, weddings and large conferences.
“It was a really busy environment, I was always run off my feet. We would do 300 or 400 covers on a Sunday lunch and 17 hour days were usual.”
Chris needed a lifestyle change with the arrival of Arlo, who is now 3 and very soon due to be a big brother. “Through a family connection, I got offered the opportunity to start a career in surveying and I’ve never looked back.”
HOW HAS YOUR HOSPITALITY BACKGROUND HELPED WITH SURVEYING?
“Communication is absolutely key. Obviously in the hospitality industry, you are constantly speaking with customers and so many staff… waiters, the kitchens, bars and the events team.
With surveying, I’m forever liaising with clients. Very often you arrive on site and the scope of works has changed. It is imperative to understand there-and-then what they require.
Hospitality also taught me how to think on my feet. Surveying is about being flexible and having the right attitude so that whatever surprises spring up on site, you need the mindset to think ‘right then, what needs doing’.”
A curious mind and detective skills are also helpful. As Chris adds “Surveying is a jigsaw. We have to puzzle it together”.
WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT LIFE AS A SURVEYOR?
“I love travelling up and down the country and I’ve been to all four corners of the UK. I’ve stayed in some incredible locations, like riverside apartments on the river Thames. I always try and explore a little of the area after I’ve finished a day’s work instead of being cooped up in a hotel. Liverpool was a great city to see recently.”
But life outdoors brings with it the Great British weather. “It’s just the nature of the job” explains Chris “but on a site in Chester this week, we got totally soaked. I would have been drier jumping in the sea”.
AND HOW ARE YOU FINDING ROCK SO FAR?
“Rock is so team focused. Everyone is willing to help and problems are resolved within seconds.”
