Rock Power Connections appoints Mental Health First Aiders

It’s standard practice within a business to have appointed First Aiders, but it’s only more recently that companies have invested in dedicated Mental Health First Aiders.

The topic of mental health has become a prominent feature in the workplace, following recent reports that a staggering 1 in 6 people experience mental health issues at work, impacting their ability to perform well in their job.

As a result, mental health charity, Mind, is encouraging businesses to appoint a designated Mental Health First Aider to provide their staff with emotional support, if and when they require it.

To mark Mental Health Awareness Week, Rock Power Connections is delighted to introduce its very own Mental Health First Aiders, Matt Crampton and John Lampitt, who will be on hand to support the Rock team in their roles.

What do Mental Health First Aiders do?

Both Matt and John have completed the MHFA England Training Programme, which is accredited by the Royal Society for Public Health. The programme is designed to teach a deeper understanding of the issues that impact on and relate to people’s mental health, whilst equipping Mental Health First Aiders with the knowledge to teach practical coping strategies that can be used every day.

The courses themselves are grounded in research and rigorously tested, constructed by experts with input from people who have experienced mental health issues.

Why the need for mental health support?

Evidence suggests that 12.7% of all sickness absence days in the UK can be attributed to mental health conditions and, as a company, Rock Power Connections is keen to tackle the stigma that sometimes surrounds talking about mental health.

The Mental Health Foundation states that addressing wellbeing at work increases productivity by as much as 12% and, instead of team members suffering in silence, Rock is committed to creating an open, positive and supportive working environment.

How does this benefit Rock?

Rock Power Connections now employs 70 staff members and has always prided itself on a positive and engaged working culture.

Matt and John are in the process of rolling out Rock’s mental health awareness communications strategy, which will hopefully encourage wider discussion amongst the team to remove any negative stigma commonly associated with mental health.

Matt confirmed: “We have always put absolute focus on physical health and safety, but as the Rock team grows, we also recognise that maintaining good mental health is just as important. A key part of our role of Mental Health First Aiders will be encouraging the team to be as aware of enhancing mental wellness as much as they do physical fitness, whilst extending support to one another.”
