The celebrations have started after Rock Power Connections was named runner up for the ‘People Development’ Award at the British Chamber of Commerce Awards. This is a tremendous achievement; having already won the West Midlands regional award and facing tough competition from 9 other regional winners from across Great Britain.
Whilst only three years old and with a small team of 30, the accolade recognises how Rock has successfully placed staff development at the heart of the company’s business strategy. But how exactly has Rock achieved this? And what are the benefits to the business of investing in staff training?
ROCK IN A NUTSHELL
Rock Power Connections is an electrical engineering company specialising in new connections and upgrades to the electricity distribution network. Put simply, we install the substations and cables which ultimately take the electricity from the power stations to the buildings where it is needed.
We are a family-owned business with a growing team of 22 highly-trained and multi-skilled engineers.
WHAT DOES LEARNING & DEVELOPMENT MEAN TO ROCK?
As Director Matt Cramptonexplains, “As a small business with a growth strategy, we knew our future success would be closely linked with our ability to grow a multi-skilled workforce, dedicated to quality and loyal to the company. For Rock, it was about focusing on the fundamentals and religiously putting these into practice.”
This means all employees are involved in workforce development; from Directors through to the Electrical Engineers. As part of the induction process, each employee develops a training matrix with a Director. This is reviewed quarterly and covers the necessary qualifications to work on a substation site through to advanced opportunities to diversify their skill set.
Mattcontinues “It may sound simple, but when done well it can be really effective in engaging staff not only in their career aspirations but also in the future success of the business. It means there is room for them to grow within the business.”
The majority of our Electrical Engineers have a background in domestic wiring. Joining Rock Power Connections has been a rare opportunity to access a niche career on the electrical network.
Rock have capitalised on the motivation of the workforce to learn by offering access to a range of nationally-recognised qualifications, such as accreditation to work on the distribution network; advanced skills such as site management; or diverse skills such as operating plant machinery, scaffolding and First Aid.
As the Rock engineers upskill and progress through the company, they gain the qualifications and experience to coach and mentor new starters. This ensures continuity in achieving the highest quality standards.
HOW DO PEOPLE HELP ACHIEVE OUR BUSINESS OBJECTIVES?
Ultimately, electrical substations can be dangerous places to work. Rock’s ability to secure new business is dependent upon meticulous Health & Safety and delivering to the highest quality standards.
For Operations Director, Reece James, having a top-quality team is the number one priority.
“Upon completion of a project, our clients rate our success based upon our quality of delivery and Health & Safety record. This is entirely dependent upon the performance of our team of Electrical Engineers onsite meaning that their technical expertise, team work, client liaison and exemplary diligence to Health & Safety is paramount to the success of the business”.
Over the past 18 months, Rock Power Connections has seen considerable growth in the number of clients, repeat business, and revenue. This has been achieved by building a reputation for excellence and through recommendation by our clients to other contacts in need of our services. As emphasised by Reece, “This is a direct reflection of the operation of our site teams.”
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS TO THE BUSINESS?
Highly motivated employees who are exceptional advocates for quality, safety and customer service.
Delivery of consistent quality by control the quality and content of training.
No recruitment costs through our reputation as a company that people actively seek to work for.
Growth in business turnover through repeat business and client recommendations.
AND FINALLY, HOW WILL THIS SUCCESS BE SHARED WITH THE ROCK TEAM?
It’s only a week to go until our next big night out, the Rock Christmas party; where the whole team will be able to join us in celebrating another successful year!
