“Feels like a big family all heading to one core goal,” is how one employee described working for Rock Power Connections in a recent company survey. A dedication to training and superior career prospects were other key factors highlighted by Rock Power Connections’ employees when asked why they liked to work for the electricity connections company.
As the textbooks say: a highly motivated team leads to excellent results; and after three years of growing the business, the award-winning, leading independent connections provider, wanted to check-in and get the thoughts of their valued engineers.
The anonymous survey asked four key questions about working for Rock, its future and what employees would possibly change about the company.
Finance Director, Matt Crampton, commented: “We have worked hard over the years to build a company that is dedicated to engineering excellence through engaged employees. We have built our reputation as a trusted, leading independent connections provider on the merit, reliability and skills of our engineering team. I am heartened by the results of our survey. Although non-scientific, it gives me and my fellow directors a great insight into what our employees think we do well as a company and where we could work even harder.”
One of the key themes that came through from the survey was the quality and availability of the training available for all of Rock Power Connections’ engineers. One employee described it as “exceptional” while another felt they were 100% supported with their training needs and career development.
Matt commented: “All our employees are involved in workplace development; from engineers through to directors. Each employee has his or her own development plan for the year which is followed and reviewed quarterly. We combine external courses and internal coaching to enable each team member to progress their career, build-up and diversify their skill set. This leads to us having an exceptional team of multi-skilled engineers that work across our ICP, DNO and private networks projects.”
The senior team at Rock Power Connections originally developed the learning and development strategy to ensure a multi- and highly-skilled workforce. The ultimate aim is to deliver consistent quality to electricity connection customers and retain knowledge and experience within the workforce.
This dedication to training and development has led to a good team spirit, an attribute that also came out on top in the survey. One employee wrote: “As a company, they have your best interest at heart”. Another highlighted the great comradery and sense of shared pride and responsibility. A fellow engineer said he “felt valued as part of the company”. And everyone agreed that the team were a “great bunch of guys” that had easy access to the management team. The directors were often praised for their knowledge, passion and enthusiasm.
Matt in particular agreed with one comment that Rock Power Connections was a “listening company”: “It was great to hear that our guys know that our door is always open and we always appreciate their ideas and experience. It’s with their knowledge and commitment that we grow as a successful company.”
The employees were also asked what is the one thing you would change about the business? Some believed that no change was needed while others would like to see even better communication and the continued diversification of work. This is an area that Rock Power Connections is already working on.
When asked about the outlook for Rock Power Connections’ future, the engineers agreed that the company’s pursuit of customer diversification was the right strategy. They all felt positive towards the future and believe that Rock will continue to grow and succeed by delivering quality electricity connections for its wide-range of clients. One employee summed it by saying: “I cannot see anything other than a bright future for us all at Rock”
Matt concludes: “After recently picking up the ‘Most Promising New Business’ award from Hereford and Worcester Chamber of Commerce, we feel that we are in the right position to offer our expertise to a wider range of customers. As a fully accredited, Lloyds registered, leading independent connections provider, our highly trained engineers offer new electricity connections and upgrades to commercial and industrial customers.
