Back in 2005, Nick Emerson thought he knew his career path. He had just qualified as a domestic electrician and was busy making a living wiring homes and businesses. Ten years later, Nick is still working with electricity but the voltage has significantly jumped, from 240 volts to 132,000 volts.
Nick left his ‘sparky’ days behind him 18 months ago and, with the support of Rock Power Connections, a leading independent connections provider, retrained as a High Voltage fitter and wireman. He is now a qualified site manager and responsible for the engineering teams on substation sites, including implementing the rigorous site safety rules.
Nick’s story is a great example of Rock Power Connections’ commitment to the training and development of its multi-skilled team. His journey with Rock Power Connections started when he was hired as a subcontractor working on panel wiring. His career development really took off when Rock Power Connections spotted his potential and supported his training for the necessary accreditations needed to work competently on substation sites. These nationally-recognised qualifications ensure skilled workers have the knowledge needed to operate in potentially highly dangerous working environments. Today Nick is an established senior member of the team working on electricity connection projects across the UK.
Nick commented: “Rock Power Connections is a really great company to work for. I have steadily progressed my career with the company. They have supported me every step of the way and provided me with the tools to further develop my skills. For a sparky or a High Voltage engineer, the overriding principle is the same – safety comes first. Just now the kit is a whole lot bigger!”
Rock Power Connections Operations Director, Reece James, said: “Very early on we saw that Nick was a strong member of our team and had potential. It didn’t take us long to directly employ Nick. We worked together on developing a personalised training and learning plan for him. From then on, Nick did all the hard work to pass the nationally-recognised authorisations and accreditation process. He’s a great ambassador for Rock Power Connections and our customers always praise his expertise, commitment to safety and his friendly service.”
Nick’s journey doesn’t stop there. He will soon be starting an extended first aid training course. He then wants to gain more experience onsite before progressing to the next stage of his career with Rock Power Connections.
Reece continued; “Nick’s story is not unique. Our workforce is motivated because we employ and invest in the best. All our engineers have advanced opportunities to progress to higher skilled roles and diversify their skill set. The success of our continuous learning and development culture is demonstrated by our excellent health and safety record and our superior electrical engineering and construction expertise. This is great news for our company and for our customers. Highly trained staff ultimately lead to higher quality work. And this is why we’re developing a reputation for excellence and our customers come back to work with us time and time again. ”
