Rock Power Connections proud to support local man on his marathon charity cycle ride

Local man, Jon Dear, is about to embark on the challenge of his life: cycling unsupported through four countries (England, France, Spain and Portugal) in aid of two cancer charities: ‘Leukemia and Lymphoma Research’ and the ‘Pituitary Foundation’. The 2,000 mile cycle ride will begin on July 6th and is set to last until August 1st when he is expected to reach his final destination of the Algarve, Portugal.

Jon was inspired to take on the herculean cycle ride after hearing his long-term friend, had been diagnosed with Lymphoma – a cancer of the blood. Jon is hoping to raise £10,000 for the two charities that have supported him.

Jon commented: “Like all who know him, I was shocked when I heard the devastating news that my friend had cancer. We were friends at school and remain great friends today; working, playing rugby and cycling together. It seemed only right that I get on my bike and try and raise money for the charities supporting people like my friend and so many other cancer patients too. The cycle ride will certainly be gruelling for me but it’s nothing compared to what those with the condition go through”.

Supporting Jon on his challenge is local independent electricity connections provider, Rock Power Connections. Operations Director, Reece James, is a close friend and welcomed the opportunity to support the charities and Jon.

Reece said: “When I heard about Jon’s challenge I thought he was crazy at first but knew my company, Rock Power Connections, had to get right behind him and help in any way we could. As a local company that employs engineers from our community, we wanted to offer our support. What Jon is doing is amazing and very challenging. We wish him well on his journey.”

Jon will be saying goodbye to his family and friends on Monday 6th July. He is currently still in training and preparing for the tough weeks ahead. Starting from his home in Bevere, Worcester, his journey will take him through western France and northern Spain before following the path of the River Douro through Portugal to Porto. Having reached Porto, he will then continue south to the Algarve.

Jon commented: “Leukemia and Lymphoma Research and the Pituitary Foundation are both incredible charities that offer invaluable help and advice. I have seen first-hand how they help support patients and their families deal with what for many is life-changing news. I hope the local community will get behind me and support my challenge and the two very worthy charities.”
