CASE STUDY: NEW YMCA CAMPUS IN MILTON KEYNES REQUIRES ELECTRICAL INFRASTUCTURE
A new YMCA campus in Milton Keynes provides self-contained flats for 199 formerly homeless young people. Built over eight storeys, the development also contains a café, nursery and training rooms for local businesses. The entire development required 500kVA with a bulk supply for the YMCA and individual three-phase supplies for the ground floor, commercial units. Whilst the Point of Connection offered by Western Power Distribution was the footway outside the development, the s

CASE STUDY: AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTION FOR A NEW SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
The construction of Cleeve Meadow School in Sidcup required a new permanent electricity supply to the development. The school provides education for 120 pupils aged 11-19 with moderate learning difficulties. Alongside 12 teaching rooms, the school also offers an open-plan library, IT facilities and a music department with a performing arts centre. The school required a 332KVA load, delivered as a bulk LV metered supply. The Point of Connection granted by UKPN involved a road

DARRYL PUTS IN THE MILES FOR CHARITY
As lockdown hit the country, one of the Rock Surveying team swapped his usual work miles driving around the country for some intense pedalling around country lanes. Darryl Hall, Senior Utility Surveyor, has challenged himself to reach 500km by the end of June. We caught up with Darryl as countdown begins. HAVE YOU ALWAYS BEEN A KEEN CYCLIST? “Definitely not,” explains Darryl. “This began when a friend’s girlfriend tagged me in the Run For Heroes challenge, where you run 5km,

WHAT ARE A BUILDING NETWORK OPERATOR'S RESPONSIBILITIES?
We are approached by an increasing number of clients requiring a Building Network Operator (BNO) installation for their development project, but they are understandably confused by the patchy information available. Here we provide a handy summary of exactly who a Building Network Operator is and what their responsibilities are. What is a Building Network Operator? A ‘Building Network Operator’ is an organisation that owns the electrical installation between the ‘intake’ and t

CASE STUDY: TOPOGRAPHICAL SURVEY OF HINCKLEY POINT B POWER STATION
Hinkley Point B is a nuclear power station near Bridgwater in Somerset. Our client requested a topographical survey to enable demolition works. Some of the areas to be surveyed were within a very high-risk, restricted zone. Rock Surveying undertook additional site-specific training to ensure the upmost safety levels. Due to the client having a strict time constraint, the Rock Surveying team had to maximise efficiency on site. OUR SOLUTION As the site was very high-risk, Rock

OVERVIEW OF THE OLEV WORKPLACE CHARGING GRANT SCHEME
OLEV’s Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS) is a grant designed to encourage the uptake of Electric Vehicle (EV) chargers at the workplace for employees or commercial fleets. Here you’ll find the key information summarised. KEY POINTS * The WCS is a voucher-based scheme. You apply before you install the EV chargers and the grant is paid to the installer. However, your installer cannot charge you for the grant before it is paid to them, eg, it must apply to the quotation for the wo

KEY REASONS TO SWITCH YOUR FLEET TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES
With clear signs that the future is electric, many businesses are now transitioning commercial fleets to electric vehicles. But what are the key drivers behind this? GOVERNMENT IMPETUS The UK has a legally binding target of net zero emissions by 2050, which is supported by a ban on the sales of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars by 2035. Five cities in the UK have been mandated by the Government to introduce a Clear Air Zone to discourage the use of high-polluting vehicles an

CASE STUDY: AN EV CHARGER ON THE ENGENIE NETWORK AT THE WAGTAIL PUB
A 50KW Electric Vehicle (EV) charger on the Engenie network required an electrical connection. Installed in the car park of The Wagtail pub in Wincanton, the parking bays were chosen to minimise the cable routes from the distribution grid whilst also ensuring clear access for deliveries to the pub. Care had to be taken regarding other electrical infrastructure in the immediate vicinity of the EV charger, including street and car parking lighting. OUR SOLUTION The Rock Team in

WHAT IS AN IDNO AND WHAT ARE ASSET VALUES?
When you require an electricity supply for a new development, you need to ask the organisation who owns the cables in your areas whether there is available capacity. This is your Distribution Network Operator (DNO), who will also own or ‘adopt’ any new cables or infrastructure installed to give you a supply. However, the DNO isn’t the only option: Independent Distribution Network Operators (IDNOs) can own the new network too. Here, you will find all you need to know about eac

CASE STUDY: ELECTRICAL CONNECTION FOR A NEW CARE HOME
Following the sale of a partially constructed site, the new developer requested help with the electrical connection. The care home required a 200KVA bulk supply which would terminate in a Heavy Duty Cut Out within the building. A High Voltage (HV) point of connection was granted by Western Power Distribution (WPD) on the opposite side of the road. The substation was located to minimise the HV cable run and to avoid crossing the site entrance. OUR SOLUTION The Rock Team instal
