Case study

WPD Depots

The Challenge

This project involved designing and installing both civils and electrical works to facilitate the EV charging install across 34 different WPD regional depots. We installed 2x rapid DC chargers at 32 depots, 1x AC charger at 2 depots, and a further 2x AC charger at a training school.

Our Approach

Our approach to the project began with initial feasibility surveys and designs. Some of the installs were designed based on a new designated supply in a feeder pillar situated close to the charging bays, and other sites were fed from existing electrical supplies in the depots plant rooms. Each of these types had to be considered and designed accordingly.

Once designs were signed off, we began a program of civils works, constructing bases, installing cable ducts etc. Electricians would then follow, installing and wiring the chargers and supplies, whether from a plant room or feeder pillar. Once the installation has been wired and energised, the electricians would work with the charger manufacturer to commission the chargers and also apply bay markings and signage to the designated bays.

Safety is at the heart of all that we do and at the forefront of our approach. From setting up a safe construction site, to managing contractors, safe digging practices and electrical installations. No stone is left unturned in making sure processes are followed and correct documentation is complete to ensure the health and safety of both people on site and members of the public in the vicinity of the construction site.

The Results

First and foremost, the project was completed without any accidents, injuries or lost working hours. The handover of each site in the project to the client was completed on time and budget, and was to the highest level of quality and safety. This is exactly the level we strive for, and in doing so, we have been able to achieve a phase 2 contract with the client, installing chargers at 83 substations across the country.

“As the client Project Manager, in my opinion opting to work with Rock Power Connections was a decision that led to completing a very successful project. Their diligent planning, combined with a wealth of industry experience, meant that the work outputted on site was to a high standard and performed to plan. Where unforeseen issues did arise, they communicated solutions quickly and decisively, minimising delays.”
