Case study

Queens Gate Birmingham City Centre – Electrical Utilities.

To install a HV (High Voltage) substation into a building that has been converted from retail and office space for apartments in NGED (National Grid Electricity Distribution).

This connection will be to supply the landlord and 68 apartments.

The overview of the challenge:

Rock installed a substation from the roadside in Birmingham City Centre.  This included the excavation of the footway and a lane closure to install the HV cable and connection to NGED network.

Our approach:

We planned the project within a specific timeline to coincide with our five day permit and school holidays.

First was to install the lane closure and the footway diversion, then with a lift and shift company we installed the substation from roadside.

After installing the substation, we could then excavate the footway for the cables in the front of the building then carry out the connection with NGED.

A very challenging project due to a long wait in gaining the permit required from the local council and in turn, caused significant delays to the project which was out of our control.

The result:

We managed the clients expectations effectively despite the unfortunate delay with the council. The team explained about the robust programme of work for the sequence of events that needed to happen to connect this to the network

The building was finally energised 12 weeks behind schedule due to the delays, however everyone was aware and understood the delay.

“This was a Developer ran construction site working for the Landlord to install the equipment to be adopted by Last Mile (IDNO)”
