New electrical connection for student apartments

City Heights is a new development of 142 studio apartments for students in Cardiff.

With onsite communal leisure facilities, including a gym, laundry, entertainment room and cinema room, the development needed individual metered supplies for the apartments alongside a landlord supply and a couple of commercial supplies.

Our Solution

* Space, both internally and externally, was massively constrained on this project. An internal 1MVA packaged substation was installed in a very tight space.

* The restricted area within the risers also meant a tight install for the MSDBs and meters.

* The site was in a very busy urban area on one of the key roads into the city. With minimal parking space, deliveries to site had to be carefully managed to avoid disruption.

* In an unusual situation, Western Power Distribution brought the HV cable to site for the Rock Team to undertake the substation installation and onwards works. This required close liaison with WPD.

In addition, the Rock Team worked closely with the onsite electrical contractor to agree the best solution and work programme to ensure both could complete their works effectively.

“There were huge challenges with the restricted space on site and with some delays to other planned works onsite. Despite this, Rock Power Connections completed the works to the client’s expected deadline.”
