A Hampton by Hilton hotel energised during lockdown

A new Hampton by Hilton Hotel in Ealing required an electrical supply of 670kVA.

The Challenge

With 182 rooms over nine floors, the hotel was built flush against neighbouring buildings with an internal substation in the rear car park and a basement intake position.

The Point of Connection granted by SSE was in the pavement immediately outside the development area. However, upon excavating, the pavement was found to be congested with insufficient space to undertake the final closing joints.

Our Solution

  • The installation comprised an 800kVA substation with a remote metering panel in an adjacent basement plant room
  • Due to the confined space, the HV cables ran in a horizontal concrete cable shaft between the point of connection in the street and the substation at the rear building.
  • The COVID-19 lockdown occurred days before the energisation date. Through liaising with SSE we managed to arrange the final connection during lockdown period satisfying SSE’s social distancing working practices.
  • When it became apparent the final joint pit needed to move to a less congested area, rapid discussions with the Council and TFL allowed the works to progress with a permitted lane closure occurring within 36 hours of it being requested.

“Securing the final connection was challenging with the implementation of safe social-distancing working practices, but by communicating with all parties, we found a way to successfully get the power on.”
